Endorsed for U.S. House of Representatives by Council for a Livable World Candidate Fund
Bruce Braley (D) was elected to represent Iowa’s 1st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2006. Council for a Livable World’s PeacePAC supported Braley in that race because of his strong opposition to the Iraq war and support for seeking multilateral solutions to global problems. Facing a Republican millionaire in a battleground district, Braley surprised political handicappers by winning a resounding twelve point victory.
While he has been a critic of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Braley has been a strong advocate for troops returning from deployment overseas. Braley fought the Pentagon bureaucracy when nearly 600 Iowa National Guard soldiers returning home from Iraq were denied full GI Bill education benefits.
Braley has been a strong ally in Congress for arms control and antiwar activists. He has earned a 100% on the PeacePAC voting record every year he has been office. He has voted to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan. He has voted for U.S. funding of the United Nations, and against funding for new nuclear weapons and expensive weapons systems that are relics of the Cold War, such as the F-22 and Joint Strike Fighter and against deploying ineffective national missile defense programs.
He took on the Pentagon again when more than 700 Iowa National Guards were denied their Respite Leave benefits, introducing legislation that resulted in thousands of National Guard troops across the country receiving the benefits they had earned.
Braley was a top Republican target in 2010. Independent Republican groups spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in negative ads attacking him. In one ad, Republicans claimed Braley supported building a mosque at Ground Zero. In fact, Braley had said the mosque issue was a zoning issue which should be left to New Yorkers to decide. Braley was also subject to attacks for his support for the Obama healthcare reform effort. Unlike some candidates in 2010, Braley did not back away from his position on this issue. In spite of being massively outspent, Braley managed to withstand the Republican wave with a two point victory.
Braley will be a top Republican target again in 2012. Independent groups have already started running television ads against him. Braley will need significant financial support to once again resist the right-wing onslaught.
