Democrat - Open Seat
Endorsed for U.S. House of Representatives by Council for a Livable World Candidate Fund
Ballots will be mailed in one week for the January 31st special election to fill the vacancy in Oregon’s 1st Congressional District. Democrat Suzanne Bonamici is in a strong position to win this seat, but she faces a significant challenge from Republican Rob Cornilles.
“As somebody who has been a business owner and job creator for all of my working life, I cannot understand fully the many factors that go into fighting and winning a combat mission. But, I pledge to do everything possible to engage military experts to determine whether in my judgment a mission is achievable.”
Suzanne Bonamici is a former State Senator and State Representative. She began her career as a consumer rights lawyer and then worked as an advocate for education issues in Oregon. In the State Legislature, she has been an advocate for middle class families, consumers, public education and small businesses. She is also recognized as the leading voice for mortgage reform, introducing legislation that ensures homeowners facing foreclosure receive timely information about how to request a loan modification and provides them recourse if there is a violation.
Bonamici has taken strong progressive positions on foreign policy and defense issues. She believes the United States has a moral obligation to lead international efforts that will reduce nuclear weapons stockpiles. In addition to creating a safer world, this kind of leadership will help to improve the reputation of the United States around the world.
Bonamici supports ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban and opposes developing new nuclear weapons systems. She supports continuing and enhancing diplomatic relations with Iran and the use of economic and political incentives to dissuade Iran from developing nuclear weapons. She believes that our troops have done their jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan and it is time to bring them home.
Suzanne’s Republican opponent is a local businessman running on his sports consulting firm’s record of bringing jobs to Oregon. Critics have claimed that his campaign has inflated this record. He has little experience on national security issues. His website states:
“As somebody who has been a business owner and job creator for all of my working life, I cannot understand fully the many factors that go into fighting and winning a combat mission. But, I pledge to do everything possible to engage military experts to determine whether in my judgment a mission is achievable.”
Republicans are hoping that a victory by Cornilles in this Democratic district will be seen as a referendum on President Obama. This election will be conducted entirely by mail-in ballot, but last minute contributions can make a big difference in getting out crucial progressive votes.
